Todd Talks It’s All in the Details. As a designer, I am always looking to create an aesthetic unique to each of my clients.  To do this, I study everything related to their project…from construction drawings to furnishing selections…to find areas where details can enhance the space and make it more personal.  Over time, I have found four common areas which have the potential to highlight the client’s individual style in great detail but are often overlooked.  When the details have been added, these areas transform spaces from ordinary to extraordinary and make a noticeable difference in the overall aesthetic.

Cabinetry. The height of ALL cabinetry makes a difference.  Not just kitchen cabinetry…ALL cabinetry.  Sure, the kitchen cabinets are the most obvious.  However, built-in cabinets in living rooms, dining rooms, home offices, and bathrooms all benefit greatly by extending them to the ceiling.  By eliminating the gap between the upper cabinets and the ceiling,  a seamless and sophisticated appearance is created.

Not only does this detail maximize storage space, but it also makes the cabinetry more visually appealing.   The exaggerated height of the cabinetry creates a strong vertical element in the space making the ceiling feel taller.  Additionally, this now connects the built-in cabinetry directly to the base molding and crown molding.  This connection now allows the possibility for those elements to be finished in the same way.  This simple step has a positive impact beyond measure on the overall design of the space.

Decorative Hardware. The power of decorative hardware should never be underestimated. The simple act of exchanging standard, generic knobs and pulls for beautiful, high-quality decorative hardware can completely transform the look of your cabinetry, doors, and drawers. For all built-in cabinetry, select hardware with a style that fits well within the architectural framework of the home.

Also, don’t forget decorative hardware can completely change the look of furniture as well.

For furniture, the spectrum of available hardware choices and finishes is a bit more broad.  Hardware is now available in a myriad of shapes and finishes.  One word of caution here… make sure the scale of the new hardware is perfect for the piece.  Order samples if needed before committing to a piece of hardware.  Also, remember if the piece of furniture is uniquely shaped or heavily carved, the best hardware may be a well concealed finger pull that doesn’t catch anyone’s eye.  These small touches will add a beautiful layer of refinement and detail to each space.

Tile. Spaces where tiles are needed are spaces that offer an opportunity for the right kind of creativity and personalization. These spaces can range from bathrooms and kitchens to pool houses and fountains.  Don’t  overlook any area where tiles are needed.  Each of them is an opportunity to insert style.  Finding the right tile for each space is critical.  Remember, when tile is done right, it is timeless.  When tile is done wrong, it is unfortunate. There are so many tiles available.  Searching for and selecting the right tile for each space will take time.   Make sure you give yourself enough time to make these selections.  Think diligently about the mood or ambience the tile selections will create when installed in their respective spaces.  Remember, tile has a long life span.  Good decisions made here the first time, could save you considerable money and time.  Embrace the chance to make each area that needs tiles unique by selecting distinctive tiles.. Experiment with various textures and patterns  to create an atmosphere that represents “you”.  All of these details can elevate any area from a mere functional space to a stunning oasis.

In embracing the power of these thoughtful details, you unlock the potential to create a home that is truly exceptional. Each carefully chosen element contributes to the overall design, enhancing the aesthetics, functionality, and ambiance of your living space. The extended cabinetry maximizes storage space and creates a seamless look. Beautiful hardware elevates cabinetry and adds personal style to any piece of furniture.  Coordinated lighting schemes create an atmosphere that is both inviting and versatile, ensuring that each room is properly illuminated for its intended purpose. And when it comes to tile, the correct selections add a distinct amount of individuality, transforming spaces into personal retreats.

As you combine these elements, your home undergoes a metamorphosis. It becomes a testament to your attention to detail.  The satisfaction that comes from immersing yourself in a space that is carefully curated and thoughtfully executed is immeasurable.  So, as you embark on your design journey, remember the power of these details. They may seem small individually, but when woven together, they have the ability to create a transformative impact. With the right combination of thoughtful details, your home will transcend the ordinary and become a sanctuary that nourishes your soul.
