Materials Matter
Nestled downtown in one of wine country’s most coveted destinations, a one bedroom
industrial loft redefines urban places. Achieving big dreams in narrow spaces is always
a challenge, however layering texture and throwing out the rule book on paint allowed
for condo-life to morph into sophisticated personality.
With an active and energetic lifestyle, homeowners wanted a minimalist design with
maximum style. Open concepts reveal multiple views of each room from every angle, so
creating a sense of easy living meant using soft finishes to dial down the vulnerability of
open spaces.
Going dark was not daunting to our client, a color consultant, she understood the
concept and was eager to explore. White ceilings were toned down to minimize
existence with midnight sky paint, giving the illusion of an overall larger space.
To remove jarring lines and ninety degree angles as visual points of departure, custom
cabinetry went to the ceiling and anchored the white mountain quartzite in between.
Investing in the most intimate room in the house is sexy. Go big in small spaces. We
used a traditional herringbone pattern, then vertically stacked the wall tile to soften the
edges against the walls. Just outside the bathroom, drama goes up an octave by using
an exotic and edgy snakeskin wallcovering.
The concept drew the eye inward, towards more important tasks, like soaking in a matte
black freestanding tub with some bubbles.
